Holyhead Squib Fleet – Tuning Session Report
Led by Mark Hogan, supported by Richard Roberts
Date: 10/05/2025
Holyhead Squib Fleet are delighted to report on the recent Squib Tuning Session held at Holyhead, which proved to be a fantastic and insightful day for all involved. The session was led by none other than Mark Hogan, whose experience and knowledge of the Squib class is second to none, and ably supported by the ever-knowledgeable Richard Roberts.
A total of nine enthusiastic crews from the Holyhead fleet took part in the full-day programme, which focused on fine-tuning boat performance through expert advice and practical application.
The morning began with a comprehensive look at rig tension and settings, with Mark and Richard generously sharing their tuning wisdom. Using their wealth of experience, they walked us through optimal settings tailored for different conditions and highlighted some of the common pitfalls and areas for improvement.
After the theoretical groundwork was laid, crews adjusted their boats accordingly under guidance. This led us into a practical on-the-water assessment, giving everyone a chance to feel the impact of these tuning changes in real time. The benefits were immediately apparent, with improved handling, balance, and speed across the fleet.
The day culminated in the practical session, allowing teams to put the refinements to the test. It was fantastic to see boats moving more confidently and crews sailing with a renewed sense of assurance.
The feedback from all nine crews was unanimously positive. Every helm and crew member walked away having gained valuable knowledge and skills, whether it was one of the new crew/helms or a seasoned Squibber. The generosity and clarity with which both Mark and Richard shared their insights were greatly appreciated, and their input has already made a noticeable difference in how our boats are set up and sailed.
A huge thank you goes to Mark Hogan and Richard Roberts for making the journey and dedicating their time to help our fleet improve. Your support and expertise were truly invaluable.
And to the fleet—thank you for turning up with energy and enthusiasm, ready to learn and improve. This session has strengthened the HSC Squib Fleet, both on and off the water and sets a great precedent for future events.
Fair winds and see you all on the start line!
Warm regards,
Craig Hughes
