PHIL RUSSELL WRITES:
A quick note from Bembridge where we raced the final day of their regatta. Braving 31 knot gusts Kestrel (Harry White & Charlie White) Osprey (Chris Gear & Sue Mclaughlin) and Icarus (Phil Russell & Olie Matthews) flew down to St Helens Fort from our Seaview moorings and with the tide.
The Mermaids had cancelled because of the wind, and the Redwings and BODA fleet were greatly depleted leaving about 15 boats in the 3 fleets. The Squibs went off last on a windward, leeward course (2.5 times) and all boats reported being pushed over the gunnels but the hardy Squib showed why it is the day boat of the Solent, coming back for more and more. All 3 boats mastered the Spinnaker legs but youth enjoying the deserved win with an impressive gybe and broad reach, 1st Kestral, 2nd Osprey, 3rd Icarus.
Bar Talk at the Prize Giving was dominated by stories of the gusts and interesting racing at Bembridge. Bembridge and Seaview sailors appreciated how much effort we put into going down to race with them in their own back yard.
The Seaview regatta tommorow looks a lot less hectic with lighter and decreasing winds over the next 3 days.
