Squibs at Lough Derg Yacht Club, Dromineer

The Squib class is very popular in Dromineer Bay, with in excess of 20 boats in LDYC.

It is a perfect boat for the club because of its fantastic versatility and suitability for the waters of Lough Derg.   The Squib racing is famously competitive, close and exciting and a Squib sailor is rarely left standing on the shore not being able to sail.

The Squib’s fin keel also makes it ideal for day cruising across Lough Derg being continuously able to make way in light winds and remaining upright in heavy winds.

Squib sailing schedule

• Friday evening club racing, first gun at 18:15hrs.  The season starts around the end of March to the end of October.
• Sunday sailing is often a cruise to an interesting part of the lake and a picnic.
• Throughout the season, normally on Saturday or Sundays, there is a very active ‘Women on the Water ‘(WOW) group
• The highlights of the year are the LDYC Regatta in August and the Freshwater One-Design Keelboat Regatta in October (with National and UK boats in attendance).
• From June to September there are local regattas every 3-4 weeks with at least 1 prize reserved for Hunter designed boats
• With the club crane in full operation now we have the possibility for boats to be “dry sailed” lifted in and out after each race. This means that we have an increasing number of boats travelling to the National events around the country and even to the UK Nationals.

We are a growing and active fleet and all are welcome to join us. We run training courses at intervals throughout the season for new and seasoned sailors. There is always somebody looking for crew to go out with them and members of the club can apply for a mooring if they wish to buy a Squib.
